4 worst crane accidents
When it comes to construction cranes the bigger the better. These amazing workhorses of the construction world can be seen towering imposingly over any modern city’s skyline. They are marvels of the modern world, tremendous feats of engineering and an awe-inspiring sight for any visitor who gets a close up view.
But sometimes their imposing size is also their downfall. When a crane collapses it’s always going to be dramatic, and sadly sometimes it’s actually fatal. We’ve rounded up the 4 worst crane crashes and shared them here. Maybe after watching these you’ll spare a thought for the dangers and risks faced by crane operators the next time you spy a construction crane.
It’s also a reminder to construction supervisors and operations managers to make sure their cranes and other heavy equipment are using GPS software to accurately track usage and monitor equipment status so preventative maintenance can be scheduled and accidents avoided.
Of course, in some cases, it’s just plain old operator error, and GPS fleet tracking can’t help with that.
If you’re a crane operator, site safety inspector or operations manager that’s responsible for making sure your equipment is being properly maintained and serviced, it would pay to use a GPS fleet tracking system to monitor it and make sure that nothing like this ever happens to you.

2008 New York Eastside falls on apartment building – 4 dead
A crane mounted to the side of a skyscraper under construction, toppled into a block of apartment buildings, killing four people and injuring dozens of others, many of whom were trapped beneath the rubble.
According to the owner of the construction group the accident was caused by a piece of falling steel that cut one of the ties holding the crane, causing it to detach and topple. “It was an absolute freak accident,” Kaplan said. “All the piece of steel had to do was fall slightly left or right, and nothing would have happened.”

In the investigation that followed, it was discovered that a city construction site had falsely claimed to have inspected the crane 11 days before the tower crane fell. Penalties totaling more than $300,000 were issued against the firms held responsible for the accident.
There were also reports that neighborhood residents had complained that crews were working illegal hours and the building was going up too fast.

Miami police issued a statement saying that one of those killed died at the scene and the other at the hospital. Rescue efforts were hampered because the crane was unable to be stabilized and officials were unsure what actually caused the crane to fall.
